Vending Machine Business Question - What percentage for commission is typically asked by Locations?

Marketing and Advertising

Here is as good question. What percentage for commission is typically asked by sites?

When it comes to commissions many people seem to think that they are entitled to their cut. I would only agree to pay a commission if the location warrants it. I always look at a few different factors before paying any money at all.

1. What are the prices going to be for the products? If the location wants a commission then the price for the product has to be higher than what I normally charge. I will not lose any profit margins due to paying out commissions.

2. How much sales volume is running through the vending machines? Let’s face it! If the sales are not there then I am not going to be paying a commission. There has to be some adequate sales running through the machines to make it worthwhile for both parties involved.

Typically to answer that question 10 % is normal. Depending on your prices at the machine you may be able to offer a higher percentage. Just remember your prices better be in order so that you can make money, and there better be a good amount of sales running through those machines so that it warrants it.

Typically if somebody really leans on you about the commission, just say you’ll give ten percent of the profit and can write a check every three months or something. Just work it out like that. Ten percent is reasonable.

Be honest with them. I always say to people, like some people say, “Oh your setting up this machine here, how much do we get? Your prices are kind of high.” Well you know what? I tell them, “Hey, this is what I pay for a chocolate bar. My cost on this is X amount of dollars.” Like a bag of chips, 40 cents, or a chocolate bar 70 cents. Yes, I am running a business. I have to make money. It is not a secret. If they went to like say Costco, or somewhere and they looked at a box of chips or box of chocolate bars, they can figure it out.

So don’t be afraid to say, “Hey I am running a business, this is how the business works for me, this is how I derive income in the business. These machines are really expensive and part of the process here for me to build the business and for your staff to buy products through the machine and for me to pay off these machines in a reasonable time frame so that I can make a profit and start expanding the business more and more.”
